Following our visit to New Era Support Services, Sue and I made our way to the Northern Area Custody Facility for a tour, an inspection and talk about the facility’s purpose.
We were met by an independent custody inspector, who explained how on a regular basis two inspectors will conduct an unannounced assessment of the custody facility to ensure the welfare of the inmates is being met and the custody sergeant is carrying out their duties correctly. Despite the situation, ensuring an inmate has access to water, food and shelter is imperative – and the work of the independent inspectors is key to making sure these basic needs are met.
I would like to thank Staffordshire Police for allowing us access to the Northern Area Custody Facility – which is usually off limits to the public – and to the team for all their hard work, often in challenging situations, and dedication.
