HMP Dovegate, near Uttoxeter, is run by Serco, and accommodates 1060 adult male prisoners serving a range of sentences including trial, remand,, those awaiting sentence and convicted men serving long and short term sentences. I am grateful to Governor Mark Hanson for showing me and my wife Sanda and my Chaplain Rev’d Gerald Gardiner around on Friday 25th March, and interested to hear about some of his innovative and practical ideas for improving conditions for the prisoners.
HMP Dovegate has the UK’s only privately run, purpose built Therapeutic Facility, where selected prisoners can stay for three years. The therapy offered helps offenders stop their pattern of offending. Places on the Facility are much in demand, we heard, as it offers hope – which may well be in short supply elsewhere in the prison.
