On Wednesday 27th July, The High Sheriff and his Chaplain, Revd Dr Robin Trotter, attended an event organised by The Mayor & Mayoress of East Staffordshire raising funds for the Mayor’s two charities – Blood Bikes and Burton Albion Community Trust.
Guests were treated to Afternoon Tea and Cakes and a special performance by ‘Nell Gwynne’ in the Council Chamber at Burton Town Hall.
A little history – Nell Gwynne was the mistress of Charles II and for many people that is all she was known for, other than selling oranges! The real Nell Gwynne is a victory for English womanhood, showing great courage against the background of the bloodiest civil war in English history and the poverty that followed for many of the population. Against all the odds, Nell became a star of the London stage and the greatest comic actress of her day and won the hearts of theatre-goers and the King himself.
Lesley Smith, who plays ‘Nell Gwynne’ is a highly experienced public speaker making appearances usually dressed as a character from history in full spectacular costume.
The High Sheriff and Revd Trotter would like to thank The Mayor & Mayoress of Staffordshire for a most entertaining and enjoyable afternoon and congratulates The Mayor on funds raised through ticket sales and a raffle for his two charities.
